Deer Creek Mackinaw’s Dalia Dejesus is a one of one athlete. She keeps doing things that have never been done at Dee Mack, last night she reached the historic 2,000 career point mark. This historic list includes WNBA all star Candace Parker, and more IHSA greats. Dalia has set and shattered many records at Deer Creek-Mackinaw, from all time points, and rebounds, to single season records. She has quite the list of accolades, last night she added another one. I talked to Dalia after reaching the 2,000 point mark.
You’ve accomplished many records. What does the 2000 point milestone mean to you? “It means a lot of things. I have the privilege of being pushed by my teammates and coaches every single day, so to see it pay off is special.”
You’re getting swarmed on defense and that’s creating wide open looks for your teammates. How good does it feel knowing that every team you play is going to double team or even triple team you due to your great offensive game? “It really does feel like nothing in a way because my teammates make my job so easy. Even when I'm getting triple teamed and can barely see, I trust any one of my teammates to yell for the ball and knock down a shot.”
Your team is currently undefeated. How are you gonna be able to maintain this success heading into conference play? “We always focus on our culture and each controllable within our team. Being undefeated means nothing if we don’t meet our team goals/expectations each night. The HOIC is tough and we’re expecting to get the best from every team we play. pushing ourselves everyday and having a refuse to lose attitude is our key to staying focused, especially going into conference games.”
Dalia and Dee Mack are on fire to start the season. They hope to continue that as conference play starts to heat up.
