Canton’s Allison Wheeler is now 2nd all time at Canton High School. I talked to her about recently beating a ranked team, moving to 2nd all time in scoring, her senior season, and more.

You just beat a tough 1A school in Abingdon-Avon. How does the team feel with the win and how does this boost your confidence going forward?

“I’d say the team is happy with the success we’ve had this week. Quite a few players stepped up and contributed in big ways. Pieces are starting to come together, and we are playing as confident as ever as a team. There are still a lot of big games ahead of us, so we have to stay focused and never be satisfied.”

You recently moved up to number 2 all time in canton’s scoring record. What is it like to be near the top of canton’s record books? “It feels good to be recognized for the work that I’ve put in over the years. I do have to give a lot of credit to our point guard, Ella Demler (Canton’s all-time assist leader), for creating a lot of opportunities for me to have good looks. We play off each other well and make each other better.”

You play in a tough conference with a lot of great competition. What is the team focusing on as you have to play teams like Washington, and Morton? “Like you said, our conference is tough and has a lot of impressive players/teams. Our goal is to just take it one game at a time and continuously prove that we can compete with anyone.”

It’s your senior season and obviously you will be playing college ball but what are you going to miss the most being a part of this Canton team? “I’m definitely going to miss my teammates, especially the three other seniors. Ella Demler, Brooklyn Dennis, Natalie Downing, and I have been playing together since third grade and we have created a ton of great memories. The team chemistry we have this year is off the charts, and the vibe between all of us has been really good. I am also going to miss the great community support that we have. Our fans are amazing, and I am extremely grateful for the amount of people who come out to support us each game.”

Allison Wheeler is commited to the University of Illinois-Springfield where she will be playing basketball. Allison is a Mid Illini All Conference first team player in basketball. She is a three sport athlete at Canton. Those sports include basketball, softball, and golf.

The 7-5 Canton Little Giants are looking to do big things in the Mid Illini Conference, but they know it’s not an easy task.
