Washington plays Providence Catholic in the Super Sectional game. Both teams have won 30 games, both teams are elite, but only one team can go to state. I talked to the stars for both teams before the big game.
Washington Avery Tibbs McKendree commit
You’re playing against Landrie Callahan in the postseason again. How are you going to be able to disrupt such a good player like Landrie? “We are going to disrupt her by applying pressure and just playing our defense! We have done such a good job all season buying into our different defensive schemes so these next couple of days at practice will be huge.”
Avery Tibbs has accolades, along with more accolades at Washington. She recently scored her 2,000th point! Now, she’s the all time leading scorer at Washington with 2,090 points. How does it feel to break the record knowing Washington has had so many terrific scorers in the past? “It’s just still very surreal and not something that was ever really on my radar. Once I got the 2000 I started to think that maybe I could get it. Credit truly goes to my teammates and coaches though, I never could’ve gotten it without us all working together for the greater goal, which was just to win games.”
And lastly does the postseason get you in another gear to go all out knowing it’s a win or go home game? And how big of a factor does the crowd play into such a big game? “I completely think it puts us in another gear! Knowing that if we lose we are done is that motivation in the back of all of our heads to push harder. Having the community supporting us plays a huge factor into our success!”
Providence Catholic Landrie Callahan Pepperdine commit
Landrie has been playing some great basketball. The Pepperdine commit scored 38 points, and pulled down 13 rebounds in the sectional championship game. In the sectional semifinal game she had 23 points and 16 rebounds.
You’re playing Washington in the postseason again. How are you feeling going into the game, and how are you going to be able to beat Washington? “I’m excited! It's an exciting time. We are pumped, our height should definitely help and having multiple players that are able to play inside and out.”
Washington is known for their shooting and they have a lot of scorers. Are you expecting this to be a defensive game? “Yes, for us to win the game our defense is key.”
And lastly you’ve been playing some great basketball all season long and really well in the postseason. Does the postseason get you in another gear to go all out knowing it’s a win or go home game? “Yes, every game for us has been a fight knowing it’s a win or go home game makes us want it even more.”
One of these outstanding players will see their high school careers come to an end. They will both leave everything out on the court with a trip to state up for grabs.
