We witnessed history at ICC the other night. Brinezo Oriole's Griffin Self threw a no hitter. I caught up with him after the game to get his thoughts on the performance.
Throwing a no hitter is special. Take me through how it felt on the mound with the performance you had last night.
“Yeah it was awesome. I have a lot of trust in Colton behind the plate, and he called a great game last night and was a dawg back there. I felt good yesterday and knew if I went out there and filled up the zone we were going to have a great shot to win that game. We played great defensively last night as well, lot of guys made plays that prevented hits, so a lot of people contributed but it was a really cool moment that I’m not going to forget.”
The bats were hot last night. Did it help you pitch knowing that you had run support? And do you keep the same approach on the mound in those situations with a big lead?
“The offense was great. Cade and Jace had some great at bats for us. Scoring that many runs definitely takes some pressure off, but the approach was the same. Just trying to get ahead early and make pitches when I needed to.”
And lastly, you guys are coming off of a big win and now are 4-2 on the season and in 2nd place in the league. How do you build off of this win?
“Just continuing to put together good at bats, if we do that we’re going to have a great year. A lot of our guys got better over this school season and we have some great new guys as well. We’ve got some great arms too so I’m excited to see how the rest of the season goes.”
Griffin went 5 innings in the no hitter striking out 5 batters.
Self and the Orioles look to continue there hot streak and try to make a run for the Thome Trophy.
